Whale rider

Hi everybody.
Today I'm going to talk about the movie "Whale rider" that we saw in class.

Whale rider is a 2002  film, it is about a maori girl called Paikea, who is the succesor of his grandfather. But here it comes the first controversy of the film, The grandfather of Paikea, didn't want a girl to be his succesor, he wants a boy like the tradition says.
at the beginning, Koro Apirana is try to being nice with her granddaughter, but he holds grudge in his hearth just because she isn't the boy that he wanted.

Later,  many problems afflicting Paikea and her grandfather... but with the past of time, or the actions that Paikea takes, this problems will have solution...

In my opinion, it is a great film, is one of that movies that you see once in a year and your knowledge expands, you try to know more about the culture that is shown in the film, you search for information, you become an investigator, an examinator, because this kind of films, makes you think that you are not the only one... that a woman who lives in a chauvinistic society can be more strong that a thousand of men.
The landscape in the movie, shows us how beautiful is our world (wthout smoke,or millions of persons with a telephone in his hand everytime), the music that is in the movie is sometimes awesome , and other times is kinda scary.

I reccomend this to the people who didn't see, and i invite to see a movie call "at five in the afternoon Panj é asr" who is about afganistan and the fall of the Taliban regime, and how the womans live in a chauvinistic society.

  1. I agree with you point of view, because I like how this film have a focus on the culture of maori, how this culture is based on traditions, how the grandfather try to continued the tradition only with men and how all this changed with the climax of the film.

  2. Hi Iván! I also think Whale rider is a great movie. Is very interesting when a film can open your eyes to other culture, and more, if because of it you start looking for more and more information. That's what hapenned to me. It's very cool to see a great story that doesn't spin around romance. We don't see a woman and a man in love, no, here we see a girl not afraid of dying, because her engine is Mystic love. For me, everything in this movie reminds purity -lanscapes, music-. And is a purity that shows you how sometimes we blind our judge. There is where I absolutely agree with you. The chauvinism ruling that society, the chauvinism that covers the eyes of Koro.
Thanks for recommending that movie! I haven't seen it yet, I'll try to do it soon.
    Try to watch Persepolis :G

  3. Your opinion about this movie is very interesting.

Iván, your point of view about the landscapes is nice, because the contrast you made with the reality that we are living nowadays is something real, that is happening.
It is absolutely true that the landscapes and the lifestyles of this culture, Maori, is totally different as what we see today.
The connection with the nature that the movie shows is very deep, in terms of the importance that it has for the Maori Culture, it is a connection with their ancestors.

Nevertheless, those cultures like Maori, show us that we are losing that connection that we used to have, that our aborigens have. Like you said, now the human race had changed the enviroment and the connection with the nature. Actually, today we see landscapes and nature places as places where we can go for vacations. We dont see it anymore as an important part of our lifestyles.

It is kind of sad. Also we people, as you too said, is making this enviroment worst, with the smoke, for example. But, also people had changed beatiful places by constructing cities.

This is something that makes me think a lot.

Anyways, It is a good film!
Thanks for sharing this comment with us.

  4. Hi Ivan.
I totally agree with you. I think when I saw the film is completely impressed with the Maori culture. While their culture has a strong connection with nature, the importance of Maori culture to the connection with their ancestors, which is very appreciable to their culture, because today you missed this beautiful connection with our environment . But part not I liked was that as a woman, could not be the successor as the tradition's successor had to be a man, so that a chauvinistic society saw, but eventually love the end when the grandfather he realizes the Paikea possessed inner strength.

In very interesting if your blog
    regards

  5. Hi everybody,
i think that there is something special in your opinios , it's the beauty of New Zeland, but curiosly that country looks like our country, it has a similar wether and the same landscapes, but we usually don't see that ,so i liked the connection with nature , nevertheless i like living in a big city, because in my opinion the wonder of the creation is the man and i respect the development and I like the modernity.
